A client said to me earlier, “I feel like I’m breaking up with you.” I reassured them that such feelings are natural. The journey from relying on support to attaining the necessary tools to navigate life independently is significant and important. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work are success sessions, especially with clients with whom I’ve witnessed their struggles and growth firsthand.
In one way or another, I wish this for all my clients. If they choose, I hope they leave me behind. But not totally. I still want fun updates with pictures or to know about the challenges they’ve overcome. Ultimately I want them to feel that our work together is complete.
Whether it takes years or just a few months, I don’t judge or prioritize the length of time it takes for someone to heal or to develop the ability to walk on their own. Each individual’s journey is unique.
This reminds me of a personal experience I had with a therapist. Once I found myself in a healthy relationship, I reached out to schedule a session. However, she suggested meeting for coffee instead. We never did, and although I felt a bit disappointed that she no longer wanted me as a client, I understood that it was a sign of progress and a testament to the growth I had achieved.
Back to the earlier client, I found myself connecting with them on a profound level, almost wanting to exclaim, “Me too!” Our journeys have been remarkably similar, both of us emerging from abusive and isolating relationships and finding security and fulfillment in our lives. Their greatest accomplishments came from rebuilding their relationships, whether it was through effective communication of their needs or holding others accountable.
I suppose that’s my hope for all of us, that no matter how life tries to bring us down, we are constructing unyielding foundations that nothing can penetrate.
Take care! Love, Jaclynn
