Evelyn has made of soul-sister friend. Their instant bond formed as Emma leaped out of her aunt’s van and sprinted up the concrete driveway, with Evelyn’s split second decision to trail behind. Within minutes, they’d united forces, armed with makeshift swords against their much older and larger cousin. They’ve also dunked in an ice chest, side by side, napped, hammock swung and settled down next to each other at tonight’s magician show. But it was our river trip yesterday that truly touched me. Emma, in all her anticipation of a playdate, had packed an extra juice box “for her friend.”

I really understand that kind of love.
In my own growing up, I had Samantha. She was the girl with blond ringlets and glasses who moved next door with her charming Tennessee twang when I was just six years old. We spent hours engrossed in Barbie adventures, the Sweet Valley High board game (where she was always Elizabeth and I was Jessica), intense games of Rummikub, and hands of five-card draw using my collection of coins, sitting cross-legged on my bedroom floor.
Isn’t the bond between friends just something special?
As we prepare to bid farewell to this country town of Roberta, Georgia, I can’t help but say a quiet “Moo” to the cow across the way. But onwards we go, to our last week away, where Stone Mountain and my in-laws await. It’s bittersweet – I’ll genuinely miss this place. Gazing out from my trusty writing spot this week, the view is truly something. A lone red light flickers to my left, perched atop some mysterious tower. And over yonder, a mile down the road, a solitary porch light beckons from a distant house. Amidst the distant bellowing of the cow and the soothing hum of cicadas, the silhouette of trees stands in stark contrast to the dusky evening.
This pace, reminiscent of my childhood in the countryside, has been a welcomed respite.
Hold on, what’s this? Two unfamiliar bugs have decided to join me on my laptop screen. My gig is up! Well, saying goodbye has never been my strong suit. So, until we meet again, see you tomorrow.
Love, Jaclynn
