In the Red

“Ships don’t sink because of the water around them. Ships sink because of the water that gets in them. Don’t let what’s happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.”

What a beauty of a line, huh? I read that on building somewhere. There’s probably a mariner out there with a rebuttal, “Not if it’s all ice in the Bering Strait and….” Just, it’s, ahhh….A saying! Take the sentiment and don’t let others weigh you down.

“Wow!” I said loud enough for the entire produce section at Fred Meyer to hear me. The avocados’ spongy feel, their hedgehog-sized girth, and a $0.99 price tag meant I’d be mashing them for a guacamole lunch.

And I did, and hours later my burps still taste like garlic.

Yes, I burp. But like on a newer date with someone, I haven’t let my readers know this. And now that you do, I think that means we’ve made it to second base together. Not sexually, just body function-wise. I doubt we’ll get to the third base or home run conversation status my best friend and I get to about our periods, because well, I only need to talk about those with one person.

How do I chronicle the building of our house? I suppose by the expenses. We’re one week in and have house plans drawn for $500, a permit for septic and well construction for $350, tree removal for $5800, and $2994 for the builder. A couple of months ago I told Dave to expect unexpected $5,000 price tags during the house-building process (I’ve heard this from others in this position) and I’ve been right. The trees, a masoned fireplace, and the larger windows all have higher-than-originally-quoted estimates.

It’s weird to itemize all the costs of building a house. Up until now, it’s just been a lump sum. Oh, poop, I forgot about the land! That was $18,000.

It’s wild to think that in just a few months we’ll pick out every detail from floors to appliances, to colors, to light fixtures. All that seems daunting, but when talking to an acquaintance about their experience building, they said that was their favorite part.

I’m just glad I added the bench window seats in our bedroom and Evelyn’s ($1,400). There are a few things in a house I’ve always wanted and reading in the pillowy bank with the ability to gaze outside is a must. Also, a must are herringbone floors. I love that pattern.

Even with all the excitement going on, I’ve been feeling listless, like I’m wading through thick Jell-O. It’s not terrible being in Jell-O, even if it’s sticky and its taste gets old after a while, but I feel a little directionless. Like I said, it’s not all the time, and it’s mild, but still, it’s a feeling that makes me spring up from my chair to go and do stuff with nothing in mind to do.

Well, my work week starts tomorrow. And it’s comfy pajama time and maybe studying a bit of Spanish. It’s been a while since I did.

Catch you here tomorrow. Love, Jaclynn
