Contingent Contentment

The cutest offer came in just this evening after our second open house. It’s a full offer from a six-person family that also noted Lana the dog and Hunter the bird in the agreement. The sale is contingent on their home’s sale, which is listed in a “hot” market, according to them.

The closing would be August 15th, or perhaps sooner. Either way, if anything on their end goes awry, we’ll get to shove $10,000 of their earnest money in a hole with the rest of our buried treasure.

What a whirlwind of a day! From funeral festivities to major barbecue togetherness, I was grateful to spend part of it doing quality deck time with my friend Hilary – who is also selling our house. She and I visited memory lane with our trip to Costa Rica and spur-of-the-moment drive to Vegas and Lake Havasu. She’s someone who knows the old me, the heavy-drinking, blacking-out person who was a shitty friend.

Years after when I was sober and reflecting on it all, I realized how much I took her for granted and had put her through. So I apologized.

I don’t feel guilty about it now. The past is the past, and I’m not that person anymore.

With Evelyn playing with Carson and plenty of adults supervising her, Dave and I slipped away on the kayak. At the first thrust and pull of the paddle in the water, I was reminded how much fun and empowering the motion was—so much so that there was an immediate joint question between us of “Why don’t we do this more often?”

With Dave and I working together, we sliced through the water quickly. Highlights from the trip were an eagle swooping above the tree line, a gaggle of ten ducklings and their mom, twenty Canadian geese, and one snow goose.

In years prior, there were three snow geese. According to Facebook posts, neighbors saw the slow waddlers crossing the busy road and one day, one got hit. It held to life for a bit, then eventually died just down the hill from our house. I still remember the smell.

Where the other one went, who knows. But I’m afraid if the one snow goose doesn’t find a mate this season, an heir won’t ever happen.

I got too much sun today so I’m a little nauseous. The overhead lights and the laptop screen aren’t fun. I better bail and see you when I’m feeling better.

I hope you had a nice day.

Love,
Jaclynn
