Hooking my Apple Watch to my wrist feels like slapping an ankle bracelet on my criminal self. But it’s a piece of technology that makes losing my other technology less likely. A built-in if-this-then-that sequence keeping my chaotic tendencies in check.
Google Keep does the same. It’s my mind on paper when I’m on the go. Gardening seeds—cucumber, zucchini, butternut squash—are heavy on my mind but still haven’t made the list. I need to get better at prioritizing brain dumps.
Sitting in the passenger seat, I FaceTime Grandma. I need her brain dump too—her arrival is in three days. I add decaffeinated Diet Coke, potatoes, green onions, and broccoli to the list.
With everything captured, and only the buying and unpacking left, why does my chest still hum with anxiety? The sweatshirt I’m wearing is too thick for 60-degree weather, my lips burn from Burt’s Bees mint, and I’m hungry. Fast food rarely makes my radar, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Later, my throat feels like a lumberjack’s sawblade is hacking at my uvula and surrounding areas. I take large swigs of ginger green tea with extra honey, letting it linger at the roof of my mouth before swallowing. Is it helping? Only for as long as it’s in my mouth.
Over FaceTime, I show my twin nephews our house guest room, pool, and porch. Their “within a year” promise to visit makes my heart happy. Whole days together—eating, hanging out, talking—for this aunt, that’s a home run. Did I mention they turned 18 yesterday? I’ll have to find one of my favorite pictures of us from when they were two. Oh my gosh, they were the cutest.
They were the only kids besides Evelyn I’ve ever thought were cute enough to allow in my orbit. Unlike most women, I’m not a baby or toddler person. Other’s kids don’t trigger a gag reflex, but more of a Do Not Enter sign.
I just took a quick break to talk to Dave, schedule this week’s appointments, and find a ’90s comedy that meets both our high standards. Somehow, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure made the cut.
