Before the Habit, There’s an Identity

I’ve read Atomic Habits twice—once in English and once in Spanish. I love it. The author’s ability to break habits (wanted or unwanted) into step-by-step, actionable tasks that help you stop or start something is genuinely helpful. So helpful, in fact, that I still use the skills myself and teach them to my clients.

Recently, a friend sent me a workbook that accompanies the book.

I’ve been noodling on these questions and jotting down ideas. If you’d like to play along, take a gander and plan to move to the next step in a couple of days.

Decide the person you want to be by asking yourself:

  • Who is the type of person who can achieve the outcomes I want?
  • Who do I want to be?
  • What values do I want to stand for?
  • What principles are important to me?

A quick refresher:
Values are things you believe are good or better than other things.
Examples: “I value honesty more than comfort.” “I value original music compositions.” “I value cheeseburgers.”

Principles are rules or maxims that guide your behavior.
Examples: “Never cheat.” “When a friend asks to borrow money, do not agree unless you’re prepared to lose the sum.”

Alright! See you tomorrow.

Love, Jaclynn
