Evelyn participated in the Pinewood Derby—her first-ever Scouts activity. It’s the longest-running and most iconic Scout event, starting back in 1953. Her third-place finish for speed earned her a sleek car trophy (“It’s hollow inside,” she reported after an eyeball inspection), along with a participant badge and ribbon.
After a short stint at home making a French bread loaf, picking up sticks in the yard, and playing in the sand, we drove over to spend time with a budding friendship: a girl Evelyn plays baseball and Scouts with, her brother, and their moms, Christy and Katie—who Dave and I are quickly feeling the love of in our developing friendship.
I dig the small-town thing. Their easy pop-over two days ago, just because they were driving past, turned into the kids riding bikes while we chatted for 15 or 20 minutes.
I feel like I’m forcing writing tonight. Mostly because my tummy and head feel swimmy and swirly, and the light of the computer screen is not helping.
How about I turn in early tonight, give my eyes a break, and lie back to see if I can get my stomach to calm down?
I’ll catch you tomorrow.
Love,
Jaclynn
