Chasing Conversation

I’m reinvigorated in my Spanish-learning journey.

Seeking everyday conversation, I initially browsed for MasterChef and reality shows, but after spending some time on a site out of Spain, several documentaries and comedies stood out. So far, I’ve watched A Quiet Man (Un Hombre Tranquilo), about the man who helped pioneer gay rights in the 1980s and 1990s. Then I changed pace and watched a hilarious movie about a family of six, a baby on the way, a new puppy, and an overbearing mother-in-law.

Setting the language to Spanish and the subtitles to Spanish means I miss the context of certain conversations. I’m okay with that. The goal is to train my ear.

Honestly, that’s a pretty apt description of what it feels like. The speedy pace of their speech and my trying to keep up is like a quick walk that keeps turning into a jog. Every so often, though, the overlap is perfect. The message lands. I understand the joke exactly as the writer, director, and actors intended, and I get a hearty laugh out of it.

It feels as surreal as the moon overlapping the sun. The ring of light. The perfect circle of that moment. I don’t even mind when I slow back down to my regular pace afterward.

This house is getting the deep clean it deserves. From standing on the second rung of a ladder to reach the extra furry layer of dust on the vaulted ceiling fan, to tackling the cobwebbed back porch, I’ve been at it.

Evelyn is losing her bed to house Paul in the office for a handful of days. That way, he’ll have a desk, a couch, and easy access to the guest bathroom.

Outside of a grocery shopping trip, I’m all set and excited for my buds to get here. In anticipation of their arrival, I bought a couple of social board games—The Chameleon and Side Effects—that will hopefully cue and fuel even more fun.

As for tomorrow, it’s the end of theater camp for Evelyn. In the evening, she’ll perform in a 30-minute play, delivering the line I’ve been prompting her on repeatedly.

I missed my calling.

Running lines with an up-and-coming actor? Now that’s my idea of a good time.

Afterward, to celebrate, we’ll take her out to the fanciest of fancy restaurants. Her request for macaroni and cheese shouldn’t be too hard to pull off.

Or will it?

A Google search for the best mac and cheese in Macon is giving me conflicting answers. It’s either the Piedmont Brewery or S & S.

Anyway, this second game of the Stanley Cup is coming down to the wire, and merely listening while peeking out of the corner of my eye isn’t cutting it.

I’ve got to be all in.

See you tomorrow.

Love,
Jaclynn
