Reid’s journal entry is too good not to share.
All week, I’ve loved watching him and Evelyn’s playful, engaged interactions, from reading books before bed to her asking him to sit next to her in the car.
He and Paul leave tomorrow. I’ll miss sharing meals, the ease of having them here, their readiness to help, and the way Paul taught Evelyn chess and thumb war, and Reid taught her word games.
I particularly loved playing Chameleon on the front porch together and being silly, like creating the much-needed sequel to Lunchables: Breakfastables.
Now, without further ado, I’ll turn this post over to a short transcription from Reid’s writings heart. Love, Jaclynn
And now, Evelyn has joined me, bearing two library books and a Disney handheld bubble machine. I’ve spent almost a week with her, and neither of us seems weary of the other’s company.
Her face displays every expression of the wisest and most curious adult. Her long red hair is never brushed, nor does it need to be.
After pretending together that the cascading bubbles are mysterious and overwhelming, and watching the iridescent clouds of them blow first toward the road, then along it toward town, she sets off to find breakfast.
She bids me a temporary goodbye with a friendly, “Well, I guess you’re all alone now.”
