“Can I get naked?”
I shrugged, shook my head, and said, “I don’t care.” I didn’t feel the choice was mine to make. It was Evelyn who would be running around in zip-car circles in the yard, playing chase with her two-piece-American-flag-wearing friend.
With the leprechaun kick of the remainder of her white spandex shorts, she squealed and said, “Here I co-ooome!” to her friend just outside the door. With airplane wings, she took off from the front porch into the lush grass and through the waterfall of rain rushing off the metal-sided roof.
I’m inside writing up clients’ progress notes for insurance purposes. I like to do a good job, so I need enough space to open my handwritten notes, read through them, and ensure the 15 or so fields requiring my attention are answered as accurately and thoroughly as possible.
Once I’m in a groove, I can spit out three or four at a time. Each one feels like a 10-pound load off my shoulders. Possibly that weight comes from years ago, when I’d get behind. I didn’t like it. But when my peers did it too, it granted my newbie counselor self permission to do the same, especially when I was part of a team approach, and we relied on each other for notes.
But today, I don’t get behind.
So, on a Saturday while at our lake place, I stow my work items and hope to carve out some time.
And I do.
I get one done, with six to go, and meet my threshold. There’s only so much daylight left. The rain has let up, and there’s a lake to swim in.
Maybe one more.
The app I use, WeatherBug, has the nearest lightning strike within four miles. The rule of thumb for us is that if it’s within 10 miles, we stay indoors.
Ain’t nobody going to be like that one guy who’s been hit by lightning seven times. You ever hear of that guy? He was a park ranger, but, strangely enough, most of the incidents occurred in random places. There’s this silly craziness when I think about him, and yet Google just reminded me of how tortured he was over it, how in fear he was, and that he eventually ended his life by suicide.
Sorry for leaving this on a low note, but I’m going to put this down and watch for bolts of lightning.
See you tomorrow.
Love,
Jaclynn
