Who’s the big girl who fixed and updated her website? Pick me, pick me, pick me! With AI’s help, I took one, or is it two hundred, steps to turn plugins on and off, rename files at GoDaddy, and enable and disable Safe Mode. In the middle, after a sequence of offs and ons, my mind had retreated into no longer hopeful. Am I being punked? A skeptical voice squeaked.
But sitting down halfway through a cave isn’t possible, so I laced up my boots and kept trucking. When the edit page button no longer spun and spun but instead brought up the actual page, everything in me released. I’d done it, and in having done it, I’d not only gained a working website and my sanity back, but the confidence that I could fix it if there’s a next time.
I was minding my own business and the weather dropped like 30 degrees. Overnight. How do I say how the weather shifting affected me? Dramatically? Cosmically? Otherworldly?!
You know, I live and die outside. Nature’s rhythms are notes I feel and play throughout the day. But that big of a plunge, from a humid mid-90s to the 60s, however pleasing, is, I imagine, as jarring as eye surgery going from almost blind to 20/20 vision. It takes a second. The who I was before is different now, and what does all this mean?
Fall. That’s what.
So the hummingbirds I’ve grown tremendously attached to will peace out for a time. With their exit, I’ll clean, then store their feeders, and let lapse the constantly filled pitcher of sugar water in the fridge.
Things will slow. Not to a halt, but close. And instead of the panic and grief of a season coming to a close, I’ll welcome it with a warm embrace.
In other news, in my arsenal goes yet another communication tool: “How serious are you being?” Since I can’t always tell if what’s said is a statement, a joke, or a dig, I need clarification from the message sender.
And that’s it. No longer daily writing, but still writing. I hope the adjustment works for you as it does for me.
