A Special Lady

“The Teachings of Buddha” is read aloud on the bed next to me. By Evelyn, the two-and-a-half-year-old (don’t tell her I told you this) that can’t read.

She’s dog-tired; from being snapped in and snapped out of the car seat, from tromping through slushy snow (she didn’t mind), and standing in frigid, send-you-hurriedly-back-to-the-car winds. Her high-pitched “whoas” said it all, though; seeing the Grand Canyon today was so worth it.

On a two-lane road with S-curves-on-steroids to get from Flagstaff to Sedona – where we will rest our heads tonight – I searched Redfin’s listings. Knowing the area is a hotbed for the richies, browsing listings seemed like a good time.

Not even a minute in, I stopped at a $4.8 million home. Scrolling pictures and features, I didn’t know what to think because, well, it did nothing for me.

A creek, that’s it? Where is the pool, fountain, butler, and croquet court? No, thank you very much!

Evelyn’s onto the chapter, The Way of Purification, while at the same time singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” Evelyn: Out the ball game, out the ball game, one-two.

Her talent is boundless.

I told Dave about the healing energies that supposedly inhabit Sedona, and he seems skeptical. I am too, but if said powers are listening, I don’t think we should express our doubts out loud, Dave, just in case they’re listening.

We’re in bed. Evelyn’s just asked, “More milk, please.” Dave’s picked up a cup and has found there’s a little left in it. “Do you want this?” He holds it out for her to take. She turns over in bed and closes her eyes. “No, I’m sleeping.”

Evelyn, Evelyn, Evelyn. Oh, how I love you so.

Love, Mom
